1. Beijing becomes new billionaire capital of the World 
(i) Beijing became the new,'billionaire capital' as the city recorded highest number of billionaires living in it for the first time, surpassing New York.
(ii) A total of 100 billionaires are now living in Chinese capital compared with 95 in New York. The data was released by Hurun, in its annual Global Rich List for the past five years measuring billionaires' wealth in US dollars. Hurun, tracks wealth in China.
(iii) It further revealed that China has overtaken the US as the country with highest number of billionaires however the top 10 billionaires list is still dominated by Americans.
2. French authorities recently sought €1.6billion of unpaid taxes from Google
(i) French Government authorities have  recently demanded that the tech giant Google, pay 1.6billion ($1.8bn; £1.3bn) of the unpaid taxes.
(ii) This figure is a lot higher than the £130million tax the company agreed to pay UK authorities recently.
(iii) Of late the tax arrangements of international companies have come under scanner and several have been accused of using legal methods to minimise their tax bills.
3. China to start a fund for unemployed workers who lost jobs in massive industrial restructuring
(i) In a recent development, China is to establish a $15.3 billion fund to assist those workers who have lost jobs on account of a massive industrial restructuring undertaken by the government.
(ii) The massive industrial restructuring was undertaken by the Chinese government in all sectors because of the economic slowdown.
(iii) The fund is to have 100 billion Yuan ($15.3 billion) for two years and will cover training and job seeking for these workers.
4. IDBI receives SEBI's nod to raise Rs 3771 crore
(i) IDBI Bank  recently received the approval of SEBI, the market regulator to raise Rs. 3771 crore from qualified investors.
(ii) The bank is to sell some of its non-core assets and is to place equity with the largest domestic investor, Life Insurance Corporation to raise capital. LIC in all likelihood invest close to Rs.1500 crore in the bank through preferential shares.
(iii) The Deputy Managing Director of the bank, B K Batra said, "IDBI Bank has capital raising plans of Rs 6000 crore for this fiscal year. So far we have received Rs 2229 crore form the government and rebalance Rs 3771 crore would be raised from qualified investor."
5. FINO PayTech with Reliance commercial Finance to provide credit to rural poor in Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh
(i) The Payments technology company FINO PayTech tied up with Reliance Commercial Finance recently to provide credit to rural poor in the states of Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh. As per the statement by FINO PayTech, "FINO Fintech Foundation, an associate company of FINO, would source and service customers on behalf of Reliance Commercial Finance."
(ii) So far, pilot projects have been launched in Vidarbha region in Maharastra and Bhopal, Hardha, Khandwa, Vidisha, Khargone in Madhya Pradesh wherein loans are disbursed under joint Liability Group (JLG) model.
(iii) Reliance Commercial Finance is expected to offer small loans to women borrowers for upto 24 months, to carry out revenue generating activities.
5. Vishal Sikka's term as Infosys CEO extended 
(i) India's second largest software exporter Infosys recently rewarded Vishal Sikka with an extended term of 2 years as the Chief Executive Officer, along with a bumper raise in annual salary.
(ii) Sikka, was rewarded for having put India's second largest software services firm back on the growth path. In a company's statement, "The Company's Nomination and Remuneration Committee (Committee) and Board recognised the outstanding initiatives taken by Dr Vishal Sikka towards restoring the company to Industry leadership, the results of which have already begun to show."
(iii) Sikka's annual compensation now stands at $ 11 million, the break-down being $1 million in base salary, $3 million in variable pay, $2 million in restricted stock units, and another $5 million in stock options, which will be awarded on the basis of Infosys's performance in a year.
6. Udai Kumar appointed MD and CEO of Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India
(i) In a recent appointment, after receiving the approval from the markets regulator SEBI, Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India appointed Udai Kumar as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
(ii) Kumar, is to concentrate his efforts on repositioning of the exchange and differentiated products. In October last year, following the resignation of Saurabh Sarkar, Kumar had been appointed as the interim CEO and MD. Before joining, Kumar was the MD of Metropolitan Clearing Corporation of India Limited.
(iii) Kumar, has previously worked with JM Financial, JM Morgan Stanley, Centrum Capital and Fortune Financial.He has an experience in stock exchange administration, capital markets, fund raising, restructuring and mergers and acquisition functions.
7.  World's first fast acting anti-rabies drug  set to be launched in India
(i) In a first, the fast acting anti-rabies drug is to be launched in India this year.
(ii) The drug, 'rabies human monoclonal antibody' (RMAb) has been developed by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) and US-based Mass Biologics of the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
(iii) The drug in so far has been found safe and effective during various phases of human clinical trials spanning over nine years in India and abroad.
(iv) The drug has been manufactured using the recombinant DNA technology.
8.  Kanavu Variyam bags Remi Award 2016
(i) Arun Chidambaram's the Director of Kanavu Variyam won the Remi Award at the 49th WorldFest Houston international, which is the oldest Independent Film & Video Festival in the World.
(ii) The award will be presented from April 8 - 17, 2016. The World premier of the movie too, will be held at the world-fest.
(iii) Apart from directing the movie and playing the lead, Arun has to his credit the record of writing the story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics for Kanavu Variyam.

Important Battles And Wars In India
Battle of Hydaspes 326 B.C.—Alexander the Great, defeated Porus, the Paurava king. Impressed by the valour of Porus, ultimately Alexander returned his kingdom to him.

Battle of Kalinga 261 B.C.—Ashoka defeated the king of Kalinga. Ashoka embraced Buddhism and preached it during the rest of his life after this war.

First Battle of Tarain or Thaneswar A.D. 1191  Prithvi Raj Chauhan defeated Mohammed Ghori. Second Battle of Tarain A.D. 1192—Mohammed Ghori defeated Prithvi Raj Chauhan. Ghori’s victory paved the way for the establishment of Muslim rule in India.

First Battle of Panipat 1526—Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodhi. This laid the foundation of the Mughal rule in India.

Battle of Khanwah 1527— Babar defeated Rana Sanga of Mewar. This battle resulted in the defeat of the powerful Rajput confederacy.

Second Battle of Panipat 1556—Bairam Khan (Akbar’s General) defeated Hemu (the Hindu General and right-hand man of Mohd. Adil Shah). It also ended the Afghan Rule and Mughal Rule began instead.

Battle of Talikota 1564- 65—United alliance between Bijapur, Bidar, Ahmednagar and Golkonda under Hussain Nizam Shah defeated Ram Raja of Vijayanagar. It destroyed the Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagar.

Battle of Haldighati 1576—Akbar’s forces headed by Raja Man Singh defeated Rana Pratap, the brave Rajput king. Though defeated, Rana Pratap refused to accept Mughal authority and carried on warfare till his death.

Battle of Plassey 1757— The English under Lord Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah.It brought Muslim Rule in Bengal to an end and laid foundations of the British Rule in India.

Battle of Wandiwash 1760—The English defeated the French. The battle sealed the fate of the French in India and paved the way for English rule in India.

Third Battle of Panipat 1761—Ahmed Shah Abdali defeated Marathas. It gave a terrible blow to the Maratha power. It made the field clear for the English.

Battle of Buxar 1764— Fought in 1764 between the forces of the English and the combined forces of Mir Qasim, Shuja-ud-Daulah (Nawab of Oudh) and the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam. The English victory at Buxar finally riveted the shackles of the Company’s rule upon Bengal.

First Mysore War (1767- 68)—In 1768, Haider Ali was defeated by the English relinquishing all his rights over Mysore in favour of the English.

Second Mysore War 1780— A grand alliance between Haider Ali, the Nizam and the Marathas was formed and Haider Ali. He defeated the English and took possession of Arcot and became the undisputed master of the Carnatic.

Third Mysore War 1790- 92—Fought between the English and Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan had to submit and was compelled to sign the Treaty of Seringapattam stripped him of half his territory.

Fourth Mysore War 1799— The British forces under Arthur Wellesley defeated Tipu Sultan, which brought the end of the Tipu Sultan. Maratha War 1803-05—It weakened the Maratha power. The English annexed Tanjore, Surat and Carnatic.

Fourth Maratha War 1817- 18—The British forces defeated Marathas and this campaign finally extinguished the Maratha Empire.

Battle of Cheelianwala 1849—Forces of the East India Company under Lord Hugh Gough defeated the Sikhs under Sher Singh.

Burmese War 1885—As a result of this War, the whole of Burma was occupied by the English and made a part of India.

Afghan War III 1919—As a result of this War, Treaty of Rawalpindi was signed by which Afghanistan was recognised as an independent State.

lndo-Pak War 1965—This was Pakistan’s second attack on India. While India had the upper hand, the fighting was brought to a stop by a call for ceasefire issued by the Security Council. Later on, Tashkent accord was signed between the two nations. lndo-

Pak War Dec 1971— Pakistan started the war attacking India on Dec 3. India defeated Pakistan on all fronts. Pakistani occupation forces, numbering about one lakh, in East Bengal (Bangladesh) surrendered. Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation.

1. Pakistan's Parliament - World's first to run entirely on solar power

(i) In a recent development, Pakistan's parliament became the first in the world to run entirely on Solar power.

(ii) Pakistan's solar power venture is supported by its close ally China with a hefty funding of $55 million.

(iii) Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a ceremony switched on solar-powered building of the parliament in capital, Islamabad. In a speech that followed the ceremony, PM Shariff said, "This the first time since independence (1947) that parliament has become self-sufficient in electricity through solar power. Other institutions in private and public sector need to follow it...This is another example of Pak-China friendship."

(iv) As per reports the solar panels can generate 80MW power however 62 MW will be sufficient for parliament while the rest 18 MW will be given to national grid.

2. Mortaza named UNDP's national goodwill ambassador for youth

(i) In a recent development, Bangladesh's cricketer Mashrafe Mortaza was appointed as the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) "national goodwill ambassador for youth".

(ii) The UN agency is expected to hold an official signing ceremony and make formal announcement to that effect on February 25.

(iii) Mortaza, is currently the captain of Bangladesh's One-Day International and Twenty-20 international teams.

3. Standard Chartered posts first loss in global operations in 26 years

(i) The British lender Standard Chartered recorded its first loss in global operation in 26 years.The reported loss is worth $ 1.3 billion or Rs. 9,781 crore due to its loans to India.

(ii) As per reports, Standard Chartered has its loans predominantly in Asia, reported a pre-tax loss of $1.5 billion (Rs 10,288 crore) for 2015, down from a profit of $4.2 billion (Rs 28,800 crore) last year.

(iii) The bank primarily lends large corporate groups with commodities (like Essar) reported a $981-million (Rs 6,728-crore) loss from its operations in India, down from a profit of $561 million in 2014.

(iv) This is the biggest ever loss posted by a bank in India.


4. Yes Bank receives inaugural Green Bond Award in UK

(i) In a recent development, Indian private lender Yes Bank received the inaugural Green Bond Award in UK.

(ii) The inaugural Green Bond Pioneer Award was organised by Climate Bonds Initiative in early February 2016 with the view to recognise the, 'Pioneers in Emerging Markets-India.'

(iii) Yes Bank received the award for its pioneering efforts in the Green Bonds market including the highly successful issuance of India's first ever Green Infrastructure Bonds.

(iv) The Climate Bond initiative is an international investor focused not for profit initiative which is involved in mobilising the USD 100-trillion bond market for climate change solutions.

5. GVK Biosciences bags Global CSR excellence & Leadership Award

(i) In a recent development, GVK Biosciences bagged the Global CSR excellence & Leadership Award in the category of Best Environment Friendly Project for its, 'Go Green, Grow Green' plantation drive.

(ii) The Global CSR Awards are constituted by the World CSR congress annually and are presented to companies on the World CSR Day to recognise those companies which believe in the value of sustainable corporate social responsibility.

(iii) The award was conferred on GVK Bio in recognition of its mega plantation drive conducted injury 2015.

6. First Knowledge Economy Zone is to come up in Amravati, AP

(i) As per recent development, the Andhra Pradesh government and the Confederation of India Industry (CII) announced they are working jointly to establish the first Knowledge Economy Zone (KEZ) with the view to ensure rapid economic growth in the state.

(ii) The KEZ is to come up in the new capital city of the state, Amravati. In a statement the Chief Minister of the state, Chandrababu Naidu informed, "The government proposes to take the help of World Economic Forum (WEF) and Harvard University in grounding the KEZ."

(iii) The KEZ is expected to begin its operation by June 2016.

7. Edu-Grid project announced in Andhra Pradesh

(i) Recently, during the two day collectors conference in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, the state officials announced the implementation of Edu-Grid project of the Department of Information Technology and Communication (IT&C) department which would unify all the state universities.

(ii) This project would enable all the students to access data pertaining to their attendance, grades and assignments among others through the University website.

8. K N Vyas appointed new BARC chief

(i) K N Vyas a distinguished scientist was recently appointed as the Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India's multi-disciplinary nuclear research centre.

(ii) Vyas appointment has been approved for a period of three years and he succeeds Shekar Basu. Vyas, has made notable contributions in the areas of design and development of a unique fuel and is a recipient of the Science and Technical Excellence awards.

9. Ather Energy launches India's first electric scooter S340

(i) Recently Ather Energy a Bengaluru based hardware start up launched India's first electric scooter S340.

(ii) The energy company is backed by Flipkart founders and Tiger Global in its efforts. The scooters will be available in the market by the end of 2016 and orders for the product can be placed online.

(iii) The scooter covers the distance of 60 kilometres in one single charge and the company claims that its Lithium Ion battery pack is IP67 rated and offers an un-compromised ride for 50,000 km.

10. Australia replaces India as world No. 1 in ICC Test rankings

(i) Recently, Australia replaced India in the World's test ranking after a 2-0 victory in a test series over New Zealand. Captain Steven Smith and Joe Burns hit fifties on the final day as Australia achieved the target of 201set by New Zealand, losing just 3 wickets in their second innings.

(ii) Joe Burns was selected as man of the match for his 170 and 65 runs from both innings.s.
