I. THE ALPHABET:There are 26 letters in English alphabets.

The first half of alphabet series is from A to M and the half is from N to Z.

A-M – 1-13 (First Alphabetical Half)

N-Z –14-26 (Second Alphabetical Half)

II.1.EJOTY: To make it easier there is a trick called EJOTY (i.e From left to Right) by which you can simply locate the position of letter without much effort.

Suppose we want to find the place of the 20th letter from the left side. And you know 20th letter is T, so now, you only have to find a letter which is two positions ahead of T, which is V.

2.VQLGB: It is similar to EJOTY but this is in reverse order i.e from right to left.

By these simple tricks, you can instantly find the position of any letter either from the left side or the right side without much efforts.This trick will help you to solve basic questions on Alphabet series.

III. Most of the questions from Alphabetic series in the exams will be from the right side as we are habitual of counting from the left side i.e A,B,C,D… But before we proceed here are few points to remember :

    From your right implies right to left.ALPHABETICAL SERIES TRICKS
    From your left implies left to right.
    To the right implies from left to right.
    To the left implies from right to left.

For example, Let’s find the place of a letter from right side which is the 14th from the left side.

Well, the 14th letter from the left side, N, is the 13th from the right side. Their sum (14+13=27) which is one number more than the total number of alphabets i.e. 26. Simply, we can solve this question easily by adding one to the total number of letters (26+1=27) and then subtracting 14 from it, we will get (27-14=13),as you can  see, which is its place from right. It will give you the position of letter from the right.

Now lets take an example from right side: A letter which is placed 12th from the right side What will be its position from the left. Again, we will add 1 to total no. of letters and then subtract the right position from it to get its position from the left side.And  27 – 12 gives you 15. Therefore, the answer is O.

IV. Next type of question which we encounter in exams is locating the midpoint between two letters.

Now, Let us consider an example to find mid-point between the 10th letter and the 16th letter from the left side. As there are 6 letters i.e. k, L, M,N and O. Clearly, the midpoint of 5 is the 3 which is same when counted from either side. And the mid term is M.The shortest way to find the mid-point between two term is to add them and then take their average.

The simple trick to solve these type of questions is to simply add the position and then take their average.

Now if we want to find the mid-point between the 14th and the 20th letter from the right side. We will add the position of these two letters. On adding we will get 34 and average will be 17 which is from the right side. We can count it from right side or else for your convenience you can convert this position into a position from the left.

As discussed earlier, just subtract 17 from 27. We will get 10th position from the left, which is j.Here you can directly recall EJOTY.

Now consider have to find the mid-point between two,now, one from the left and the other from the right.

Consider an example to find the mid-point between the 7th position from the left side and the 12th position from the right side. Now simply convert the right position into a left position to easily solve it. Now again subtracting 12 from 27 will give us its position from the left side(27-12=15). Now add up 15 and 7 and take average we will get 11, apply EJOTY.And the answer is K.
